It’s not like Starcraft is a bad series or players have completely abandoned it, but Blizzard just has so many new series they’re moving forward with, ones that are more popular and much, much easier to monetize, that it’s hard to see Starcraft remaining a priority. I have my doubts even that game will ever exist, but I’d say it stands a better shot than a third fully-fledged Starcraft title at this point. Where does Starcraft fit in here? Honestly, if Blizzard ever does decide to make an RTS again, I have a hunch that they’d just move the Starcraft team to Warcraft 4 instead. WoW is still a money-making machine, Diablo 3 managed to become one of the best-selling games of all time, and Blizzard is sprinting forward into new territory with Hearthstone, Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch. Combined with the fact that the genre has mostly fallen out of favor altogether in the age of the shooter and the MOBA, and it’s tough to see a clear path forward to Starcraft 3. RTS games are some of the least monetizable titles in existence due to their need for perfect balance and the fact that it’s a lot harder to sell things like skins for them. Is Blizzard done with Starcraft? Obviously they haven’t declared that, and they’ll just say the old “anything’s possible” line in regard to its future, but looking over Blizzard’s line-up of games, it’s hard to see Starcraft as anything other than one of their lowest priorities going forward, at least in its current RTS form. It seems like this is their farewell to Starcraft. But exactly none of this seems like in any way Blizzard is trying to set up for a sequel. The only thing that seems even remotely like a cliffhanger is one final scene where “life is starting to regrow” on formerly barren planets, and no one really knows why.

The Terrans and Protoss are ruled by (mostly) benevolent leaders while the Zerg has taken over new planets but seem to be avoiding declaring war on anyone. Raynor and a (possibly human) Kerrigan literally ride off into the sunset.

I ended up beating it with no more mineral or gas deposits to mine, and a swarm of mutalisks who were the only things that could jump to the now island-like portions of the map where the last few void crystals needed to be destroyed.Īfter that, Kerrigan smokes Amon and we’re treated to what is effectively the most comprehensive “happy ending” epilogue imaginable for the Starcraft series.

The final mission almost sunk me entirely, as it made me be Zerg (my worst race by a mile) and it featured endlessly respawning enemies and Amon who would literally rip away the bases of me and my allies as the map became increasingly fractured. The missions are tough, definitely the hardest of the campaign. Fortunately for her, this does not mean morphing into a Cthulhu-like tentacle lump like the other Xel’naga, but rather becoming a sexy angel of light (of course) with god-like powers. To do this, the last living Xel’naga tells Kerrigan that she has been chosen to ascend to become fully Xel’naga herself. None of this “the darkness rises again in a thousand years” nonsense that always seems to plague plotlines like this. The plot of the epilogue is that since a banished Amon is still a dangerous Amon, they have to dive into the shadow realm and kill him once and for all. There are three, and in them, you get to play as Protoss, Terran and Zerg respectively, closing out the series with all three races and their three main heroes, Artanis, Raynor and Kerrigan, all working together.
